Assistant Professor
Sanjay Saha Sonet
Sanjay Saha Sonet is a researcher with a background spanning tropical forest ecology, biodiversity assessment, and the application of machine learning to environmental systems. Currently, he holds a position as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Environmental Science and Disaster Management at Noakhali Science and Technology University, where he teaches and supervises research in GIS, computational ecology, and biodiversity conservation. He was awarded the prestigious Erasmus Mundus Scholarship to pursue his M.Sc. in Applied Ecology, studying across the University of Poitiers, France; University of East Anglia, UK; Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel, Germany; and University of Coimbra, Portugal. His early research characterized tree community structure and biodiversity hotspots across tropical forest reserves in Bangladesh, contributing to a body of published work on species distribution, timber classification, and habitat conservation. In recent years, his research has shifted toward applying machine learning algorithms to model freshwater biodiversity and environmental change, including predictive models for aquatic insect populations, zooplankton abundance, and water quality. He has served as Principal Investigator on freshwater biodiversity research for six consecutive years, and as Co-Principal Investigator and Associate Investigator on projects spanning DNA barcoding, environmental microbiology, and machine learning-based water quality estimation. Sanjay plans to develop predictive, data-driven tools for monitoring freshwater ecosystem health and biodiversity change. Through his work, he aims to bridge classical field ecology with modern computational methods, contributing to more effective, evidence-based approaches to biodiversity conservation and environmental management in Bangladesh and beyond.
